Headline consumer price growth in the Eurozone last month likely fell even further beneath the level preferred at the European Central Bank, where the officials could maintain monetary policy for all of the current year and beyond, according to observers.
An economists’ poll predicted that the annual Eurozone headline inflation rate in January slipped two-tenths to 1.7%, which would bring it well below the ECB’s target of 2.0% over the medium term.
The less-volatile core rate was set to remain at 2.3% y/y, observers said.
“Upside surprises in both German and Spanish inflation have led us to revise our headline forecast up (to 1.8%) from 1.74% y/y, Societe Generale wrote. “However, January figures typically carry uncertainty due to the annual reweighting of the inflation basket and tax changes, the degree of uncertainty is higher this year because of methodological updates, most notably the addition of games of chance to the inflation basket.”
Another drop in the headline rate of consumer price growth might lead some to think the ECB bank could turn more dovish, but with core inflation holding above target, the large majority of those polled have predicted there will be no rate moves this year.
The next ECB rate decision is scheduled for Thursday.
Eurozone Big Four data mixed
Announcements of preliminary January numbers from three of Europe’s four largest economies offered varying results. Germany said Friday that its EU-harmonised annual inflation rate rose to 2.1%, a tenth more than the forecast and the reading in the previous month. Earlier in the day, Spain reported a five-tenths decline in its headline reading to 2.5%, a tenth higher than estimates.
On Tuesday, France announced its initial estimate of headline inflation rate at 0.4%, which was below January’s 0.7% and the 0.6% forecast.
Consumer price growth in Italy, scheduled for release concurrently with the euro area data on Wednesday, was expected to fall to 0.8% from 1.2%.
