The euro area economy likely produced a touch less expansion in the fourth quarter than in the previous three-month period amid unprecedented volatility in the global trade environment.
An economists’ poll said quarterly GDP growth in the Eurozone rose 0.2% last quarter after increasing 0.3% in the previous three months.
Also due with the preliminary data report Friday is the year-on-year rate, with a Q4 rise of 1.2% expected following 1.4% in the previous three months.
Confidence among businesses in the eurozone jumped more than expected in January, in line with a rise in consumer confidence at the start of the year.
The European Commission said Thursday that its Economic Sentiment Indicator—which measures attitudes of businesses across multiple sectors of the economy—rose to 99.4 in the month compared with 97.2 in December.
STOCKHOLM—Sweden’s central bank held its key policy rate at 1.75% Thursday and reiterated that the next move is unlikely to happen any time soon.
Riksbank policymakers have now held rates steady for three consecutive meetings as they monitor falling inflation and an improving domestic economy that has seen household consumption increase and business sector confidence building. The labor market has been lagging but policymakers have previously noted early signs of a turnaround.
US President Donald Trump and Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer moved on Wednesday night to reach an agreement to negotiate new restrictions on federal immigration agents, potentially averting a government shutdown, the New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing officials familiar with the matter.
Under the plan, the Senate would carve out legislation funding the Department of Homeland Security from a six-bill package of spending measures required to fund the military, health programs and other federal agencies through the rest of the fiscal year, the Times said.
